  3. You can:

    Do your own taxes.

    If low income, get the IRS or a volunteer to do them.

    Pay a preparer (who may or may not be licensed).

    Pay an enrolled agent (took a test that focuses solely on tax preparation, takes continuing education and is licensed to represent you before the IRS).

    Pay a CPA or attorney (took a test, may not have a tax focus, etc).

    It's your choice.  If you have a serious issue, an EA is often the best bang for the buck....

  5. Not if you feel comfortable doing your own taxes.  Unless you have a complicated tax situation, using a tax software package is fine for most people.
