  1. It depends on the purpose of your travel.  If you are coming for business or pleasure and spending less than 90days, you may travel here without a visa.  If you are coming to work, to perform, to be a journalist, etc. etc. then you need the appropriate category of visa.


  2. No.  You are free to travel here for 90 days.

Why are you coming to the US?  There is Visa Waiver Program which allows British citizens up to 90 days as a tourist with no visa -- just check in upon entry.  You still need to prove you have onward or return transporation, and sufficient funds for all the typical tourist stuff like sightseeing.

    If you ever violate any regulations regarding VWP, you can never use it again!  You would have to apply for visas for anything, and having violated VWP, you have strikes against you in trying to get a visa.  No job hunting, no apartment hunting, absolutely nothing that could be construed as attempting to remain in the US!
