my family is planing a trip to ohio us next year do we need any visas or anything before we go

If you have no criminal convictions and have not been ejected from the USA previously then you can sign a declaration on a Visa Waiver form. You are then exempt from needing a visa if you are a UK citizen.

If you live in the UK and no one travelling has ever been in trouble with the police then you don't need to apply for a visa as you fill in a visa waiver form on the plane before you land. You can then stay for 90 days.
