Question:

Do you need caddying experience to be hired at an elite club?

I am looking to make some money over the summer, but I don't want a job that has a regular schedule. I'm 23, been playing golf since I was 3, I'm a 6 handicap, and belonged to a country club for 18 years. I've only caddied a handful of times for my dad and his friends, but definitely I know how to do it.

I want to work at an elite club because the tips are obviously better. Does anyone know if prior experience is required?

  1. Clubs typically have a caddie rating system. If you're a decent golfer, you'll be fine. It isn't rocket science- Show up, keep up, shut up! Each golfer will expect something different levels of participation from their caddies.  If you're a good player, expect to advice and read putts. If not, they will expect not much.

  2. The other answers seem to be right on the money.  Weather or not you need experience depends on the Club regardless of elite status.

Me personally... I started Caddying at River Oaks in Houston, which is one of the most prestigious clubs in Houston.  I caddied for the owner of the Texans and saw former President George Bush Sr. there too.  The caddie program is run by the same company that runs the caddie program at Augusta National.  I had never caddied before and was not a good golfer either.  I was about an 18 handicap, but I do read puts very well.

I will reiterate what another guy said.  Golfers will require different things from you.  Some will want you to read every put.  Others will want you to listen to them talk.  And some will want you to just stay out of the way and be quiet.

I think good customer service and hard work are more important than a great golf game or experience when starting out.  At least that is what I found at the places I have caddied.

  3. Being a good golfer will probably get you more than a couple years of experience would. I know at the Wynn golf course ($500 a round) here in Las Vegas, they do not require caddies to have experience, but you must be a 6 or 7 handicap (I don't remember exactly) to be considered, and you must be able to prove it.

Anyway, it never hurts to ask. The worst they can do is say no.

  4. Depends hwere, if your in the UK then no.

  5. Most clubs that have caddie programs have grades of caddies.  The little 14 year olds that never caddied before are in the beginner group and the guys that have been doing it for years are at the top of the hierarchy.  At your age and with your golf experience you shouldn't have a problem, but don't think you know everything, be willing to learn about caddying from someone with more experience, and be careful not to insult or look down on the members golf skills, most of them will be well above a six handicap.
