Do you need experience to work in a butchers?

I really want to work in a butchers ( a bit random I know ) and I was wondering if I would need to have prior training or whether its a learn on the job type thing. Also, I'm under 18 would that affect anything?

  1. If you are talking a local butcher. You could probably get a job doing other things like packaging & such until you are 18 due to machinery laws. However if there is a local grocery store you could apply as a meat wrapper, or what we used to call a chicken man. These people are usually working towards apprenticeship as a cutter. This way you learn the basics first and safely. After you are 18 you can take the test (not all places require but the certification is nice) and become a meat cutter.

    If you are somewhere like West Virginia where there is plenty of hunting look around during hunting season and find someone who privately dresses the kill. (like deer) Often these guys or gals will happily teach ya lots at no cost.


  2. My dad used to work in a slaughterhouse running the hamburger machine. He didn't have any prior experience. And yes, in most states you do need to be over 18 for insurance reasons.  

  3. yes u should have exp coz there r verious cuts which u should know & the main thing is dat it needs a lot of guts 2 do dat job.

  4. yeah you have to be over 18....i dont think u need experience to know how to cut meat
