Do you need insurance for a vehicle you've taken off the road and have a SORN for?

I have taken my car off the road as a protest against the cost of road tax and petrol prices. The car is SORN with the dvla but I can't find any information about if I need to keep the insurance on it or not! Anyone got any idea on this one? Please ...........

  1. If its not on the Street, and you dont drive it, then no.


  2. If you're not going to be driving it, I'd take the insurance off, but I don't think you'll be NOT driving that long cause then you'll have to get it all back before you drive it again and that will be one more headache.

  3. If you still own the car, you still need insurance on it. Here in the US, you can "suspend" most of your coverages if you are not driving it. This way you only pay for the comprehensive coverage, so if it is damaged or stolen, you are still covered. I imagine they have something similar there too.

    Plus, if you cancel you will have lapse in your insurance history, making insurance much more expensive when you decide to start it up again. Call your insurance company and ask them what options you have.
