Do you need the PS2 Hard Drive or the PS2 Start-Up Disc to play on-line?

I have been trying to get my ps2 online but i cant. i have the old ps2 and i bought a used network adapet, but whenever i put it in and try to go online, it says hardware not found on the network configuration setup on madden 09. do i need the ps2 start up disc also? or do i need the ps2 hard drive?

You  need the Start up disc. Also MAYBE the hard drive too. but basically the start up disc
