I was just wondering this, are you supposed to tip when you get take out from a restaurant? I don't think I every have, but my mother-in-law did once and I thought it was strange. Is it polite to do that? I don't tip the grocery store cashier for ringing up my items, so why would I tip the cashier at the "Carry Out" register? Just curious, thanks :)

  1. no

  2. definition: give a tip or gratuity to in return for a service, beyond the compensation agreed on; "Remember to tip the waiter"; "fee the steward"

It can be done, however, it isn't very common.  Although if you are a regular at the place and you want to leave a good impression, you might choose to leave a tip.

For the record, I wouldn't.... cheers!

  3. it is generally not customary to tip on carryout orders.  The people that work the carryour section in the restaurant generally make minimum wage or more.  Not the 2.13 per hour servers make.  I'm a waitress.

  4. I worked at a pizza restaurant for a year and only 3 people ever tipped me for carry-out and it was VERY unexpected. I almost felt like I wasn't supposed to keep it.

Unless there's a tip box or jar, I wouldn't worry about it, but being extra nice never hurt anyone.

  5. I don't, but each to his own.

  6. NOOOOOOOOOOOO

  7. Yes, I always tip on carry out...

People don't realize that the carry out person makes a crappy wage, but still goes through a lot of the same work that servers go through.

You have to answer the phone, take the order, get the food together, greet the person, make sure the order is rang in correctly, and while at the same time, you still have to help out the other servers in the restaurant if it is busy.

Trust me, it can actually get stressful working To-Go.

    I always tip.

  8. No, I never would. I only tip if I am eating there in person or if they actually deliver it to my door. Your mother-in-law must be generous.~~

  9. i don't think you have to. but if it's a place you visit often, or if you're just feeling generous, it wouldn't hurt.

  10. I don't think you should. I never have.

  11. No way.they're not even serving you, just making the food. All they half to do id put it in a bag.Keep your money honey.

  12. At the carry out register.. all up to you, not a must but not inappropriate.  I usually base it on what they actually did for me.  Like at a restaurant, if I can tell they took the time to add condiments, napkins, silverware, and extras without asking then I leave a tip.  Especially if they are friendly smiling and willing to get whatever I need.  At some places, people are assigned to be on "to-go's"  They don't make too much, you should tip them if they make the effort to get what you need ;)
