Do you need to charge clients sales tax if you have a small home-based business?

  1. Here is a quick blurb from the Tennessee Dept. of Revenue:

    "State sales and use tax is imposed on all retail sales, leases and rentals of most goods, as well as taxable services.

    Tennessee cities and counties have the option of imposing an additional local option sales tax."

    If you provide a good or service in one of the taxable categories, you will most likely have to add the sales tax in regardless of whether you are home based.

  2. It depends.  If you have a business where you are marketing products in person, the answer is yes.  If your products are sold online through a parent company, it is usually taken care of.
