Do you need to clean oil flues?

Question

i have noticed a sooty type substance coming from my oil flue- well i assume its from it?? - do you need to have these cleaned? we are in this house 5 years and its been fine until now - advice appreciated :)

yes it needs a service sooner rather than later.

there is always soot produced by oil burners, however this should be of a small amount and encapsulated by the flue. if the soot is on the outside of the flue, then the flue is leaking. this could kill! get the appliance checked and serviced.

have your furnace serviced. They should clean pipe during regular maintenance. Get your heater serviced once a year
