Do you need to enjoy science to be a doctor?

I'm 25 and faced with the difficult decision of whether to go back to uni for six years to become a doctor. My first degree was in the arts and by nature, although I have always achieved good grades, I am not a scientist. I absolutely love the human side of medicine but am very dubious as to whether I'd enjoy and/or struggle with the science. Are there any doctors out there who can help me?

  1. You don't have to enjoy science to become a doctor. However, you DO have to enjoy science to become a GOOD doctor. Since this country is already overrun with doctors who don't enjoy science, my recommendation to you is that you follow your natural instincts. You will only be happy in a career which is related to your interests and talents.

  2. If you don`t like science don`t become a doctor.

  3. The word science denotes a very broad field.  You might enjoy anatomy, but hate biochemistry.  You might like the overall topics of biology, but hate genetics.  I doubt that you have to love science to be a doctor, but I guarantee that you have to understand it.  You will find out in the first two years if you're up to the task.  By the time you take organic chemistry, if you're not able to grasp the basic concepts, then you're not cut out to be a doctor.

  4. Well the first two years of medicine (US system) will be nearly all science.  Most people with non-science background have a hard time initially adjusting but soon get into the swing of things.

Science is the basis of diagnosis of disease and thus requires a wide breath of knowledge of all the major areas of biological/medical sciences.

If you are someone who is more about patient care over the why, whats and hows of treatment of disease then I would suggest the noble field of nursing.  The people who actually take care of the patient are the nurses and a good one is invaluable to the medical team.

  5. YOU NEED TO ENJOY THINGS THAT YOU DO OTHERWISE DON'T DO IT.

  6. No.

If you really love it and

    it's makes you happy

    to save people's life.

    no ones stop you.
