Question:

Do you need to get a separate eye exam for colored contacts?

I have clear contacts, but I want to get colored contacts...and I was wondering...do you need to get a separate eye exam for colored contacts? Or can I just use the prescription I use for my clear contacts for colored contacts too? My sister told me I need a separate eye exam for my colored contacts...but that doesn't really make sense to me. Can anybody clarify this for me?

Thanks :]

  1. When you have your contact lense fitting, the doctor takes specific measurements to fit the best contact lens to your specific eye. Some of the contact lens companies have colors of the same lenses and only take a small modification on the RX to be able to be filled. Some people are fit with lenses that do not have proper colored lens counter parts, or the kind that the person wants is not available in the same perameters as the clear ones that they have. So, the doctor would have to re-fit you with the new lense with the new measurements. This is to be on the safe side and make sure that the right base curve and diameters are ordered in that specific lens material for you. Your sister is most likely right, unless you have a clear lense that has identical colored lens sisters on the market. The best way to find out is to ask your docor's office. They can tell you what you need to have done.
