If you are already a confirmed and known artist they certainly will accept you, otherwise, I'm afraid you'll have to go through art school.

That is a good question, you could be excellent at real art, but that isn't sufficient, you have to be brainwashed into other folks ideas of "Art" so that you become confused enough to accept the c**p that we see the brainwashed raving over what they accept as "Art".in this "enlightened" society.

   That is why you have to go to art school..

In Texas, it's likely that you will need to major in Art to teach art.  The reason is that you're not just teaching how to make art; in addition, you're teaching a bit of art history, art from different areas of the world, and art theory.  It really will help you as an artist in the long run to, imo.  

You can also study cool stuff like art & technology:  digital video, web design, new media, photoshop, etc.  I think the demand for this type of art is rising.  Check out the school below.  I had really great professors there, and it was very affordable.  They have Art & Technology major or Art & Performance.

To work at a public school, you must earn a four year degree in Art Education or its equivalent.  (Equivalent means a four year degree and then complete a post-BAC or MAT program in art education.)  

I've seen a (serious) local musician and community leader petition the university for life experience credit and he lost.  He took it to the state department of education... and lost.

Another thing to think about... art education school are not always fully accredited to award grades in classes that will transfer to a four year university.  Also beware that several big-name online schools are not recognized by all state department of education to award credits or degrees.
