  1. In the entertainment industry as a whole, almost none of the internships are paid.  That means that you absolutely have to be enrolled in an internship course in order to get an internship, because the companies cannot legally have you work for them without giving you some form of compensation (they say they are giving you course credit, but it is actually the schools that is giving you the credit, of course).  In addition, most companies want to reduce their liability by having you enrolled in school.  If you were injured on the job, they can say that you were doing work for your college, rather than being their employee!  Finally, an internship is supposed to tie in with what you are learning in school.  It isn't just an ordinary job.  Therefore, while you may be able to get a job at a recording company, you couldn't get an internship if you aren't in school.

Interns usually don't need any prior work experience to be hired, although many companies would prefer that you have worked somewhere before, so that you are familiar with the rules of the workplace.

You don't usually get "promoted" as an intern.  You have an internship for a defined period of time, and after that the company may make you a job offer, if they have an opening, they liked you, and you are graduating, or not.  Honestly, my experience with entertainment industry companies is that they take on lots of interns, but hire very few people permanently.  They use free interns rather than hiring entry-level employees.  Unlike in many industries which use internships as a screening device, many companies in this industry just move on to the next intern and rarely make permanent job offers.
