  1. i think you can mail anything without going to the post office regardless of weight. the reason people go, is if they do not know the exact postage or if they want additional features from the post office (i.e.: insurance)

  2. under 12 ounzes in the mail box is fine. they have regs on the mail box and you meet the criteria.

  3. You don't have to take it in, but if it's just under 13 oz. it'll be more than 4 stamps (first class) goto www.usps.com and calculate postage.

  4. New Aviation Security Measures that were implemented this past summer dictate that you MUST present a package that weighs more than 13 ounces AND has postage paid with adhesive postage stamps, to a Postal Employee face to face.

Less than 13 oz can just be dropped in the box. Over 13 oz can be dropped in a collection box, or left for a carrier, if you use online postage or meter postage.

USPS Click-n-Ship allows for the printing of Priority Mail and Express Mail postage, free of charge. There are also PC Postage providers that you can use that will allow postage for any class of mail, in any amount.

4 Stamps will not cover the postage on 12 ounces. Depending on the final configuration of your item, it will be a Flat or a Parcel. Flat postage rates start at 80¢, and 17¢ for each additional ounce up to 13 ounces. Parcel rates start at $1.13, and 17¢ for each additional ounce up to 13 ounces.

4 stamps, $1.64 will only cover a 5 ounce Flat, but just a cent short for the 6th ounce. $1.64 will also cover a 4 ounce Parcel, exactly.
