I am a US citizen, born and raised in Wi, and I am considering moving out of this country. I was wondering though do you need car insurance in Mexico? Please do not give me a sermon about you need car insurance in ever state, country! In Wisconsin, you do NOT need any type of insurance, cops don't ask for it, if the know you don't have it, you don't go to jail or get tickets blah blah, nor does New Hampshire, South Carolina & Tennesse somewhat. So spare me this, just need the facts about Mexico.

  1. Yes, you should definitely get (at least) liability insurance for your car while in Mexico.  It's not that expensive. I paid $184 for the year and could go all over Mexico.

The reason: They follow basically Napoleonic Law wherein you are guilty until proven innocent.  When involved in any vehicular accident all parties are basically at fault until proven otherwise. Your car gets towed and impounded and you can go to local jail until they figure out what happened. Then , if found guilty, you must pay damages, etc.  If you have insurance, you're basically o.k. as this is like a bond. Call your agent and their (the insurance company's) local rep comes out and deals with all the paperwork and stuff. You don't go to jail and your car can get towed to a repair shop, if necessary, for needed repairs.

If your on a Toll Road, part of your Toll Fee helps cover your deductible or fees on your insurance.

We drive from So. Cal. down to (as far as) Manzanillo at times. All over Jalisco and Nayarit states.  Been to Mexico over 100 times.  I always get insurance. Believe me, this is one place where you want liability insurance.

  2. yeah, it's about 200-300 dollars.  most of the time it's good for nothing...but it does help you from getting hassled by the cops and having to pay bribes.

also, where i lived, it's called "seguro" not "segurancia"

  3. Is better for you to have one. It is cheaper than in the USA and it can protect you a lot.

Just one month ago, my insurance company paid for an accident I was involved.

If you don´t have a car insurance, you will have to pay dollar by dollar by yourself.

    I live in Monterrey, Mexico.

  4. you do not require by law a car insurance in mexico.

I have a nissan 4 years old, and JUST PAY 240 USD per year for a full insurance.

it is worth having an insurance, the last year I smashed A CAR  just paid 100 fee for having all the situation properly arranged

that was it. without an insurance I would've paid 1000 dollars including the fix of my car.

common sense  tells me the cost of the insurace is far lower in mexico than it is in U.S.

if you don't have insurance there is no problem if you don't crash your car, or run over a child .

nobody cares, and there is no law  except in MEXICO CITY.

have a good one in mexico!.

  5. Well, I live in Mexico and have never been asked to show proof of my car insurance...BUT, I would not be without it.  They Do throw you in jail here if you have an accident for which you cannot pay...and the insurance is soooo cheap.  See site below for my favoirite ins. agent.  My ins. is less than $ 300.00 a year for a 200 4SUV.
