  1. No you don't all you need is a radio...

    and internet...................................

  2. You don't pay radio license fees to BMI if you listen to just the radio. The problem arises if you send that music all over your shop or office on a system. Then you will have to pay for the license fees to play the music. Don't get caught either. Fines are huge!

  3. It's not a radio licence as such, it's a licence from the Performing Rights Society. And yes, you do need one, as playing the radio in your office or shop is classed as a public performance.

  4. yes or you will haft to pay performance rights

  5. You need to pay an ascap fee

  6. no you dont just plug it in and turn it on

  7. yes big money too, with out a performing artist licence as it is called the owner of the shop will get fined and put in court

  8. I believe you are in the UK. If so, and the radio is audible to many people in the workplace - yes. If you are sitting at your desk with your personal radio or internet - no.

In the US the rules are almost the same. Any public performance or rebroadcast must incur royalties so the writers and performers can make a living. This is especially true at bars, that's also where most of the enforcement takes place - not in offices.

Enforcement? What the jukebox/radio police? You betcha. There are undercover folks constantly traveling to bars, restaurants etc. looking for violators. My brother took a job as an enforcement person for one of the US outfits and only lasted a few weeks. Couldn't take the harrassment and hatred. He really was a pariah for a while when he'd break the news that they had to start paying.

  9. Do you get the radio program you want? If they haven't wanted you to pay for it I wouldn't worry about it.
