The new iPhone comes with GPS capibility. I'm wondering if I'll only be able to use the GPS function if I get some kind of data plan through my phone provider, or if GPS is something completely seperate that works as long as you have a GPS unit?

  1. no need to PAY

  2. you probably gotta pay

  3. There is no fee charged to access the basic GPS system. It is a system that was designed by the Department of Defense and then later opened up to public use for free.

If you buy a Navigational GPS like a TomTom or Garmin Nuvi you can expect to have full functionality of the basic services like routing your journey and turn by turn directions all for free.

You can pay for extra services like traffic and weather information but there is no need to do this unless you want to.

You can also expect to find that there will be a map update once a year but this also is not something that you are required to do.

All in all your GPS will function properly without paying any extra fees after the purchase price of the device.
