Do you need to reserve a hotel room in Tulum?

I am going to Tulum and will be staying 3 nights(W, Th and F) in the begining of august. I kind of want to check out the hotels once I'm there to see what I like. I don't need anything fancy but A/C and a comfy bed w/ mosquito netting. I don't plan on spending alot of time at my hotel so I don't want to pay alot. Any suggestions on places to stay would be appreciated as well. But for those of you that have been; is there usually alot of vacancies? Or should I play it safe and just book ahead?

  1. If it was me I would book in advance. August is actually a busy time, lots of Mexicans, Europeans, Honeymooners and families like to take beach vacations then.

That's just me though, I'd want to know that I had a place to stay after traveling. I'd hate to end up stuck with out a bed or in some flea bag hotel due to a lack of availability.

  2. Book ahead is my suggestion, at least one night so you don't have to mess around when you get there. The small hotels in the downtown area pretty much all have A/C. However the cheaper "cabanas" on the beach tend not to have A/C as many of them are eco resorts. The hotels range from resorts like Dreams Tulum, to beautiful cabanas like Azulik, and Zulum, and on the cheaper end of the scale you have Copal.

Have a look at http://www.tulumboutiquehotels.com if you want more info on the area and a few hotel options.

  3. i work at a hotel... trust me. it's smart to book ahead... call some hotels where you will be staying and ask about all the things you're wondering about. you want this vacation to be the best right!? well where you're going to stay is a big part of it. it's my job to keep the guests happy. =] and plus it's good to call around to find the best deals.

good luck!!! and have fun on your trip!

  4. I would definitely make a reservation.  Nothing is really cheap in Tulum anymore.  Places I can recommend are Piedra Escondida and Nueva Vida and my favorite, Mezzanine.

PE does not have a/c but it is right on the beach and there is a great breeze.  Try for an upstairs room.  They have mosquito nets and ceiling fans.  The electric shuts off at 11 pm.  A small restaurant that is nice, but average.

NV is an eco hotel, just a few rooms, all on stilts.  Power comes only from windmills and solar panels.  NV means New Life, and the son of the owners, who survived a brain injury and they brought him here to recover, is the inspiration.  And recover he did - a miracle.  A tiny restaurant that is very good but everything is prepared to order so think "leisure."  A great beach, tops optional.  Strong currents often.

The Mezzanine is great.  A beautiful setting overlooking the Caribbean.  A cool pool but small.  Only 9 or 10 rooms.  They started with 7 and are adding a few.  The restaurant is GREAT.  Thai influenced.  Try the Mango Margarita or the Verde, which is made with Midori.

I am sure you can find info on Trip Advisor and the hotel's own websites.  The Mezzanine fills most every night but is worth it.

I live in Cancun but go to Tulum pretty much.  Just there 2 Saturdays ago.
