  1. Yes it is easy, as long as no jackass in a boat wakes you.

  2. My first time kayaking was off of Catalina Island, near L.A. I assume sea kayaking is rougher than a calm lake, but it was still pretty easy for my first time. The person who we rented our kayak from gave us a quick lesson on how to paddle, then just sent us off! I think you'll be fine without lessons, especially in a calm lake. However, you could still do a little research about paddling and keeping control over the kayak. Have fun!

  3. no you don't need lessons but an outtfitter can give you some tips as how to keep going in a straight line and so forth  but sure hop in and start paddling have fun and keep the hairy side up

  4. Yes. Boating accident numbers are up...one reason; lack of experience. Lessons teach you how to enter and exit a kayak. You learn about wet exits. Required equipment is shown and explained. A kayak is stable in the hands of a someone with a little knowhow. Few beginners ever learn to paddle a kayak without lessons. Don't paddle alone...wear a PFD... Kayaking can be a 'life long' sport. If you just want to play around on a small lake you should consider a canoe. They are easier to control, more stable and require less gear.
