  1. I would suggest child development, child psych, esp adolescent psych, some special ed classes.  Anything you can take to get you to know children better is an asset; you will have special ed students in your classes and you need to know how best to help them.  I would also say any behavioral class would be good.  I know these sound silly, but being a secondary English teacher, I can't tell you how helpful they were to me.  I would also take writing classes as well as your English classes. I wish I had taken more "reading" classes.  I have also taken brain-based education classes, as well as Lindamood-Bell classes, and found them all very helpful.  But you don't have to take them all before you graduate. You can let your future school district pay for some of them. Hope this helps.

  2. I have both a degree in English and a secondary education endorsement.

I took a child development class; however, the only part that really helped me was the segment on adolescence.  I think it can be helpful if only for that one section.  There should be adolescent development courses available.  If so, you should take those over child development.  Take young adult literature also.  Your school will be able to advise you on exactly which classes you need to take.  Every school differs a little in the courses offered.  You will  have required courses in college, which will cover what you need.

  3. Child development would be good actually. Child psychology if possible. You get to see the whole child and not just grade perception. It might give you a heads up on how the mind of a youngster works and therefore you will be able to adjust it to secondary education.
