I have rotel amp (RB-985) and pre/pro RSP 1066.

Do I have to turn off my amp everytime I am done listening to music or watching movies?

Thanks.

  1. If it's solid state, and I'm pretty sure it is, I'd just turn it off when I can remember. It'll save a bit of juice. It'll lengthen the life of the unit and its parts and in case of a surge, possibly the unit itself.

Also, it's the green thing to do.

  2. Most amplifiers draw significant power even when idle.  They draw much less wattage (2-5W) when turned off.  If you don't mind paying for the electricity, leave it on.

  3. The thing you have to worry about the most is heat. Amplifiers tend to put off a lot of heat and if it's in any type of enclosed cabinet it will shorten the lifespan of your amp. The microchips do not like heat at all, so I would recommend always turning it off when not using it, especially if it's in a cabinet.

  4. They are those who feel that you should leave them on at all times, especially with the old tube amplifiers.

I'd say it should be left up to you whether to or not, but remember if you do leave it on that it will be more electrical power consumption.

  5. You don't have to. I lot of times I forget to turn mine off for days.

I hope it's not to hard on the electric bills. Just don't run any signal in when your amp is off. The constant turning on and off power will shorten the life of most electronic parts. Not telling you to leave it on for months. But a few hours or a day or two won't harm it.
