  1. you need your license, unless you have your birth certificate and a photo ID to prove who you are.

  2. See website below for what you need to cross the border.Applies to Mexico too.

  3. If you have a passport, you could use that in lieu of a drivers license and it's usually also a good idea to bring a certified birth certificate (it can't be a copy).

I'm pretty sure the rule of thumb for U.S. and Canadian citizens (at least for now) is valid photo ID (like a drivers license, or in your case, a different kind of valid photo ID) and an original birth certificate.  At least in San Diego, you can get an original birth certificate down at the County office on Harbor Drive - it costs $12 a copy, I think.  They can print it up for you right on the spot, it only takes a few minutes.

Starting in 2008, though, you may end up needing a passport - so maybe think about applying for it sooner than later, if you like to travel in Mexico.  My husband and I were just at the post office applying for a passport for our newborn son and the clerk told us that we should renew our own passports asap because they are really back logged (like 6 months) now and it may become law to have them in the new year.

Hope this helps!  Have a great lunch with your friend.

  4. you don't need a license i cross the border all the time just with my birth certificate, sometimes they ask for an id with photo but that is it
