No, No, No...there are STILL people saying you must have a passpot to travel to Mexico by LAND now and they are STILL WRONG.  That requirement has NO set date...see site below and read top half of page carefully.  Photo I.D. and birth certificate are what you need now.  See 2nd site for new passport card which can be used for land travel when the requirement begins.

Looks like now just a DL with photo ID will do. Get that doggone passport, you've had plenty of time.

NO THEY WILL LET YO THROUGH WITH YOUR ID AND BIRTH CERTIFICATE... I WENT LIKE 2 WEEKS AGO AND THE BORDER PATROL CHICK TOLD ME THAT STARTING JANUARY 31 YOU NEED AN ID AND BIRTH CERTIFICATE OR PASSPORT...

I thought as of January 15th or so, 2008 you needed a travel from Mexico to the U.S.  So, I think yes.
