  1. No, you don't need anything at all to be an underwriter.  A company can hire you in without a high school diploma, if they want.

    But in reality, you need a bachelor's degree in anything, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Or years of insurance experience on the agency side of things.


  2. No.  They're completely unrelated.  Series 7 is a securities exam.  Being an underwriter just takes the lack of a personality (insert snare hit here)  8-)

    Actually depends on what you're underwriting...a medical background is useful for insurance undewriting and a math background (finance) is good for underwriting mortgages.  Although evidently even that hasn't been important in the last couple years - "ok...wants money to buy house they can't afford.....approved!"
