Do you pay state and city taxes on short term stocks?

I know if you sell a stock in less than a year you pay your Fed tax, but do you have to also pay state and city taxes on that gain as well?

Also for the Fed tax, do you just pay whats in your tax bracket?

  1. It depends on the rules in the city and state you live in.  You'd have to check the tax code for them.  

    I would guess though, that if you pay income taxes to the city and state, you will be taxed on any gains as well.

  3. Depends on where you live.  State, usually.  City - depends on what your city taxes.

    For federal, you pay income tax as ordinary income, so yes it depends on what tax bracket you are in.  The stock sale could raise your tax bracket.

  4. Short term gain is taxed using the tax tables.  The same as your paycheck or interest....
