  1. I already answered this but my answer seems to have gone poof, so I'll post it again.

I have known many western riders that post the jog or trot while we were hacking but in the ring, especially the show ring, they sat.  If you simply ride western for pleasure, by all means post, it makes the trot or jog easier on your entire body once you are used to it, but be prepared to be laughed at by those that don't understand and don't worry, you can laugh at them later when they are stiff and sore from a jolting day of sitting the jog.

Zephania is correct, on a good western horse it can be difficult to post, most have a jog as smooth as butter, but when hacking out in groups where some rode english and some western, it was often left to the western riders to keep up, we couldn't be bothered to slow down...ahhh to be young again....when truly trotting, most of my western friends would adopt that strange idea of posting rather quickly.

  2. Yes they do matter of fact they should

If your showing most will stand up  in a trot not a jog

But yes the horse wont  know the difference ,,

    a good rider does!

  3. No, you're not supposed to.

I generally do this only when I'm trying to get the horse to trot really fast (rare with western riding, where a slow jog is expected) and not break into a canter.  Training, in other words, or for some folks walk/trot contesting.

Good western pleasure horses are actually difficult to post on.  Their jog (slow trot) is so smooth there's no ooomph! that pushes you up; you have to do all the work yourself.
