Do you prefer 'English' or 'American' Budgies?

Just out of curiosity... Tell me why, too!

I like both

The english were bred by the english (hence the name english budgie) as show birds.

The 'american' budgie is so called for no particular reason other than wanting to call it their own???..... The american budgie IS the australian budgie.

As an Aussie I won't even go into the "American" name thing, but as a breeder of both, and having both as pets I prefer the smaller type

It sounds a bit silly, but there is something about the way the feathers of the English change the appearance of the eye shape that makes them look a bit evil. LOL....yes I realise how odd that sounds. The smaller budgies show their entire eye - round and "innocent" looking. The English generally have poofy feathers over the top of their eyes making them look sly.

That said my favourite pet budgie is an English but that is based on snuggle ability alone. He's a sweetie and will happily just sit on my shoulder for hours.

Watching my small pet type budgies is a lot more fun. Where as the English just sit there looking all superior the smaller guys love to clown around.

From a breeding view point the smaller budgies breed with less fuss and with a much higher success rate to weaning, and any conditions for them seems to be "ideal" conditions, but the English budgies do bring more money, and seem to be more popular.

I've never heard of an American budie b4. Only English and Australian. English budgies being the bigger bred and Aussies being smaller. If your after a budgie that is a good size in the hand go English, smaller and more active the Aussie. I have one of each and the Aussie runs rings around the English.

I love all budgies, and English budgies have quite an impressive look, but honestly, I don't think people should be breeding them.  Wild budgies were made to be a certain size and shape, and someone somehow got the idea that it would be better to make them look different... they ended up with the "ideal" budgie which is so mutated that it's barely the same bird these breeders claim to love so much, and the poor birds have about half the lifespan normal budgies have, as well as heart problems due to the unnatural weight, and people breed them that way on purpose just for show!
