Do you prefer Sigg bottles or Klean Kanteen?

I know that Sigg bottles are aluminum and have a special lining and are supposed to be safe. Has this been confirmed? The Sigg bottles are claimed to be taste neutral. How does the safety and taste compare to Klean Kanteen?

  1. They are the same.

  2. The Sigg design is a little better.  They both cost way too much though.

Look for aluminum bottles backpackers use for fuel.  They are the same material as these bottles and I have been able to get them for $2 apiece on clearance.

  3. I have tried them both and prefer the Sigg.  The tops on the Sigg bottles fit better/more secure than the plastic tops on the Kanteen. The Kanteen tends to leak sometimes.

Also the Sigg preserves the taste of the water better than the Kanteen, especially after a day in your pack.

The Sigg does dent more easily than the Kanteen, but both are very durable.  The Sigg is a bit harder to clean because of the more narrow mouth.

The Kanteen is made in China, and other bottles (not Kanteen) have had problems with toxic paint used by the Chinese.

Both cost too much, but I recommend the Sigg if you're choosing between the two.

Edit:  Regarding Andrew's suggestion to use fuel bottles... that is simply a poor idea.  External coloring on fuel bottles may contain toxic metals.  More importantly, the inside is not lined with an FDA approved liner like the Sigg, so you will get a metallic taste (and perhaps some leaching of metal as well).
