  1. Yeah, there's something to it, but it's basically a fancy way of describing and identifying your impact on the planet and its resources.

Malarkey refers to exagerated or foolish talk, usually intended to deceive.  Word origin unknown but I tend to associate it with the Irish.  They do like the color green, after all.

  2. Malarkey is an ole time phrase for B.S.

  3. Bob makes some good points, but the tools available to assess your own carbon footprint aren't very good at all.

    Malarkey is similar to BS.

  4. Our household had it's carbon footprint estimated by a professional company and I was shocked to find how bad it was.  To maintain our lifestyle we need four and a half planets!  We thought we were living a pretty green sort of life, compost bins and re-cycling like mad etc.  That we live in a bungalow with high heating costs was probably our downfall.  As far as I am aware, we are not being taxed on our carbon footprint so I don't know what hersheba is on about.

You have your answers on malarkey.  I cannot add anything to them.

  5. Emissions of carbon dioxide are causing harmful changes to our environment.

We all contribute to the problem.  We all can help fix this, scientists, governments, and people.

The "carbon footprint" of an event or a person is the amount of carbon dioxide that event or person causes.  It's like leaving a footprint on a pristine trail.

Calculating "carbon footprints" is a useful idea in helping people to understand what they can do to help do things better.

    Not malarkey.

EDIT - I won't argue with J F that the tools on places like the Internet to measure your carbon footprint, with a short survey, aren't very good.  The footprints scientists calculate are much better.

  6. no & tomfoolery........

  7. i have a carbon butt print

  8. I believe scientific evidence, and the overwhelming majority of respectable scientists agree that the data show that global warming is caused by human actions and that carbon is the main contributor. I must also mention that even if all the scientists in the world are wrong which is the more logical conclusion, to hope they are wrong and run the risk of destroying the planet or to do what we can to fix the problem. Even if the problem is not man made, worst case scenario we end up with a energy independent economy and have cleaner air.

  9. Re carbon footprint.....I think this is just another excuse to tax the working classes.

I've no doubt that such a thing could be worked out, but any carbon emissions you or I generate are vastly outweighed by the junk that developing nations like China through into the air everyday.

    Re Malarkey from Chambers dictionary:

malarkey or malarky noun, colloq nonsense; rubbish; absurd behaviour or talk.

    ETYMOLOGY: 1920s: originally US.
