Do you really need a BA to be a Substitute in California?

  1. In a public school?  Yes.  Most school districts in the US require not only a 4 year degree in Elementary or Secondary Education, but also that you are certified to teach in that state.


  2. California requires a BA and that you pass the CBEST test given by Praxis to get your substitute teaching credential.  Private schools are allowed to set their own standards and many do not require that you meet the credentialing requirements.

    Without a BA you could look at being a substitute teaching assistant you need to qualify with the district that you are willing to work in and will need to take the County office of education test to prove you are highly qualified.  I know that this test is different from one area to another so I can't advise you as to what you need to pass it, but my understanding is that you need to be able to do 8th grade math and Language arts to successfully complete this test.
