I have never been to college...has anyone heard of anyone who has written a produced screenplay, that NEVER went to college?

I have taught myself by reading books and am now knowledgable enough to write a script...but is that enough?

Yes I am aware of how tough the industry is and how many millions of scripts never get produced..my question is..do I at least have a chance?

  1. You don't need a degree... MBA is definitely a no no... an MBA (I take it you aren't interested in writing about business dealings or ethics!) is a business qualification, why would you need this?

You don't need anything other than some paper and a pencil... as well as lots of talent, creativity and an astronomical, incredible amount of luck... if you want it to be made into a play or film, that is.

There are plenty of people that have done it without going to college or without the benefit of college, many of the better ones do, as with most spheres of life.

Tarantino, Kevin Smith (dropped out to make a film instead), Alan Bleasdale, (I'm guessing) Carla Lane, Woody Allen (he wrote and had work bought before he went to college), David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac), Cameron Crowe, Roald Dahl, TOM STOPPARD!!!

  2. I'm working on a book, which has already been confirmed as acepted publishing, (even before it's finished), and the most I've got in languages is 2 GCSE's in English, 1 GCSE in English Literature, 1 GCSE in French, 1 GCSE in German, and 1 GCSE in Latin.

Now whilst I am bi-lingual, (I always order 2 types of pasta), the only real degree's I have are in Music and Law, so nothing really pertaining to writing a script, and I've actually had a play commissioned by the local theatre.

My advice is to start small, don't think you're gonna' get your first script performed in the Gielgud or the Apollo, but aim for something such as a local theatre, or acting group, then work your way up.

  3. Look at Ben Elton, obviously education affords nothing, you'll be fine.

  4. my motto .. try and you wont regret you effort

dont try and you will always be left wondering

    good luck ...x

  5. YES - you can do it without a degree! Carry on teaching yourself and go for it!

Join a club that will encourage you.

  6. Of course you have a chance, if its good it doesnt matter whether you have qualifications or not as long as its good and worth reading
