Or is it mostly government hype because they failed so miserably during Hurricane Katrina?

  1. All of the levees that were damaged by Katrina have been repaired and reinforced. The levee system is getting a $14 Billion upgrade that won't be finished until 2011 or 2012, but many improvements are already in place.

The uncertainty is because NOLA has not been hit by a hurricane since Katrina and therefore no one really knows how well the levee system will do.

The evacuation is much more efffective this time and there is basically no chance of Katrina's apocalyptic conditions being repeated by Gustav. Also, many of the people who did not leave in 2005 have not returned to the city so they don't need to be evacuated this time.

It does appear Gustav will make landfall well to the west of New Orleans and most of the metro area will get only wind and rain.

Still, Gustav will cause huge destruction wherever it goes, and many people will lose their homes.  Just hope no one else loses their life.

    Wish us all luck!

  2. Mayor Nagin said "This is the storm of the century. Get your butts out NOW!"  He's well known as a calm and collected man, so if he's putting it that way, I'd have to say he knows something we don't; like it's going to make Katrina look like a spring shower...

  3. new orleans is gunna get wiped outt.

  4. Nobody knows for sure.  If it stays on it's current path...landfall will be approx. 65 miles west of NOLA.   What happened in the past can't be changed.  I think that the government is being very proactive with Gustav.

  5. No, its going to calm down

  6. hopefully not. they have improved New Orleans especially so much, that they can't afford to redo it. let's pray that the government installed some great protection in time for the storm. also, the mayor called an evacuation yesterday, just for safety.

  7. I think this will be worse than katrina. But we will see!

  8. dee dee dee

  9. I don't think this is any hype.  The National Weather Service is not (as far as I know) government controlled.  There IS a good chance that Gustav will hit Louisianna and probably New Orleans.  After Kartrina, do you blame them for wanting to get everyone out before it hits?
