  1. I think it is up to that person, whatever makes you happy, But I don't think in nature they where meant to be that way.

  2. It's hard to say something like that. I think some people have higher propensities of monogamy than others'.

Recent research into evolutionary psychology shows that monogamous relationships are much safer and more controlled than polyamorous  or polygamous relationships. We're not genetically "programmed" to keep reproducing like crazy. Our coding is, ironically, geared toward a standard of living.

If a person is happy in a monogamous relationship, it's very likely that they have the genes that allow them to be monogamous. If not, they are more than free to pursue outside relationships.

There's nothing inherently wrong with it, but it is a subject of considerable sensitivity.

  3. I'm not sure what to think.

If we weren't monogamous, we would have been overpopulated a long time ago! And we would all have the same bloodline and incest would be nothing more than word.

I think that yeah, we are meant to be monogamous, otherwise, we wouldn't try so hard to court one person's attention, and we would get jealous when they left us for another.

So yeah, we are meant to be monogamous, but there are those of us who choose to break the mold.

  4. No -- but we weren't meant to live in nice comfortable houses either, or fly around in airplanes.   But we do those things anyway.

    .

  5. yes, that's why we get jealous

  6. No, some are just more insecure than others.

  7. I've read a few very persuasive articles in biological determinism that have pointed to pair bonding as a phenomenon common to very few species, so there isn't a great deal of precedent for monogamy in terms of simple biology.  I think that the sheer amount of cheating that goes on among humans also weakens any argument that monogamy is somehow natural.

Speaking on the topic of social evolution and sociology, modern society in the West has of course adopted monogamy as law for the most part, having mostly to do with resources and child-rearing.  That of course has nothing (well, maybe not quite nothing) to do with sexual partnership.

Personally, on the very abstract concept of "love," I fail to see why/how this should be limited to only one individual.  That said, I'd be very happy to grow old with my wife as my only partner going forward.

To summarize my thoughts: No, we weren't "meant" to be monogamous, but it's a personal choice, which when applied to a larger population, becomes a social phenomenon and is interpreted by some as therefore natural.

  8. Since we are animals, we come from a line of species where the mnale needs to dominate other males and have maultiple partners. That being siad, as modern day humans weeking peace and harmony, it makes sense to be monogamous, unless we and our partner decide and agree otherwise.
