  7. YES!!!!

    -Asian-fusion: Betelnut (Union Street) http://www.betelnutrestaurant.com/

-Mediterranean: La Mediterranee on Fillmore street as you go up the hill its on the left, very small and easy to miss. try google maps for more details on location.

  8. Basic American and California Restaurants I recommend:

Tadich Grill 240 California-The Original Cold Day Restaurant: An old boy’s kind of place that has been around since 1849. Great seafood, chops and sourdough. Stiff drinks, no reservations, but counter seats are first come first served.

Judy’s on Chestnut at Scott- My favorite brunch place in the city. Huge omelets served with your choice of English muffin, home made blueberry muffin or pumpkin loaf [my favorite]. Order a side of potatoes to share, these are, bar none, the best home fried potatoes in the world.

Izzys on Steiner at Lombard: - This SF institution is known for steaks, seafood and stiff drinks. Eclectic historical pics decorate this dark wood paneled favorite. Don’t miss the creamed spinach, Popeye would give up the canned stuff in a minute for theirs.

Pluto’s on Scott between Lombard and Chestnut-Fast food that is fresh, and eclectic. No fancy waiters just good basic food, unusual sandwiches, custom salads, and great side dishes.

Balboa Café 3199 Fillmore – Good burgers and salads, not bad crab cakes and other California Style cuisine at this old boy feel restaurant. Started by our current mayor some 20 years ago, a favorite with the 30 something crowd.

Barneys Gourmet Burgers 3344 Steiner Street. Great burgers of beef, chicken or the Veggie sort.

Bills on Clement at 25th, the best burgers in the city. Lots of creative toppings, great malts and good fries.

Farallon – 450 Post- Seafood served in an amazing underwater garden setting $$$$

Hays Street Grill 320 Hayes at Gough. Fresh fish shines at this neighborhood favorite. They specialize in grilling fish and then serving it with your choice of sauces that only enhance the taste of the fish and shellfish.

Clement Street Bar & Grill -Clement at 8th Ave. A neighborhood favorite with something for everyone, pasta, burgers, seafood. Baseball Mary and Paula the bartender make everybody feel welcome.

Tommy's Joint on Van Ness at Geary an old style SF houfbrau, they serve such unique dishes as buffalo chili over rice and the meatball sandwich is the bomb. The pictures of San Francisco all over the walls are a history lesson. Nothing fancy but filling and welcoming.

Home on Market at Church good comfort food [mac and cheese!] near the Castro.

Chow on Church at Market – California Favorites – stop in to the Pilsner and have a drink on the patio while you wait for your table, the Chow host will find you.

  9. MELS DRIVE-IN!!!! The best place ever! go there everytime i visit the bay. great theme, old fashion burger joint.

  10. Trendy and hip: Houston's on the Embarcadero is great. They have great food, location, decor, staff. I love everything I've had there, from steaks and ahi tuna salad, to dessert and drinks.

Down Dive: Whiz Burgers Drive-In.  Man, the food is tight: think killer burgers and fries. It's in the Mission, has a parking lot, you walk up, order, and eat outside. This is the place for burgers, bacon, cheese, fries, shakes, all that dirty heart-attack-aliciousness. The link below tells you the menu, but the site does not do it justice. Tip: it's not s**y like the other selections, this is blue collar at it's best!

While in town: don't miss the Castro Theater, it's all s**y and refurbished like cool *** theaters should be. They play a lot of cool and classic stuff, as well as new stuff, and the price is right.  If you go, and fun place to eat/drink is Nirvana, just up the street. Nirvana has a great selection of cocktails and deeeelicious foods. The flavors are heady, but watch on the price. It's not super expensive, but not cheap either. Oh yeah, and the environment! Sooo much atmosphere!

And fa sho! Do not miss the Ferry Building Market Place. It's on the Embarcadero and has the most exquisite selection: earthy, hearty, s**y, comfort food, shops, grocery, restaurants. Burgers, wine bar, cuisine, bread shop, cheese shop, kitchen shop, fish, meats, other restaurants I haven't been to yet, chocolates, gelato....this is a taste of foodie heaven. "Bon Appetit Magazine: In this food-crazed city, the Ferry Building Marketplace is the nexus of all things good ..."
