I am a 22 year old African American female. Will it be safe for me? I most likely wont be able to find anyone that wants to go and I cant afford 2 tickets. I really really want to see it. It will be my first time out of the country and I am a bit nervous. I also dont speak the language, only know a few words and phrases.

  1. if you are traveling alone, don't go into the cities, a lot of stuff happens in the cities. Stay in Punta Cana, it's calm and relaxing.

  2. Hi dear,

Of course you can travel alone, it all depending where you planning to go/stay. If it is Puerto Plata, this is a tourist area with a town at 10 min from all the hotels/resorts. If you need any help or assistance here, just contact me at my private mail (see avatar) Happy to help you!

  3. I think it is relatively safe if you use common sense. Of course, don't wander around areas that are deserted, and don't walk around at night. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, and listen to your gut if a situation just does not feel right.

Also, as a female, be prepared for lots of comments from local men- they are not at all shy about letting you know what they think of you... but it's all good-natured, as long as you are not easily offended.

As far as not speaking Spanish, don't worry about it too much. I am not a fluent Spanish speaker, but I found that most Dominicans were extremely impressed if I made any effort at all to use the bit of Spanish I do know. If they use their few English words, and you use your few Spanish words, you can usually figure each other out  :-)  Also, I encountered many people who spoke English rather well.

Have a great time, and stay safe.

  4. Of course it would be more fun if you travel with someone but if you are doing by yourself you only have to be careful like any tourist in any foreign land. It’s completely safe, I know the media tent to categorize us a violent county (now a days news is all about violence anywhere pretty much) when in fact we are very friendly and we welcome tourists. Don’t be afraid to ask people for directions but make sure you carry one of those translator device with you just in case because the majority don’t speak English. When I went there when I was 17 years old after leaving the country when I was still a baby I was very concern but it was a great experience (the only difference is that I spoke Spanish and still would get kind of lost and never got myself in trouble because I would simply walk back to a place I would recognize).

  5. I don't recommend travelling anywhere alone, it is a lot more fun if you have somebody with you.

However, I think you will be fine if you go alone. I just got back from Puerto Plata and I don't see a problem with going alone. If you mostly stay on your resort you will be fine. I don't recommend going into town alone or anything though, there is a lot of crime and it can be a little scary or intimidating.
