Do you recycle? What do you think of this?

where i live we have to, the local autority have this system where all the wheelie bins are fitted with an electronic microchip thingy and the rubbish bin scanned and not only are we charged for each uplift (just under 5 euro i think) but we are charged a monthly fee as well ( just went up to 12 euro) and all the yellow recycling bags are collected for free. The idea is backfiring though as the local authority has put all the charges up due to a low up take, and i think no wonder! talk about over the top charges, i'm all for recycling and doing my bit to save the planet and all that but if these charges go up much more i'm just going to have to say stuff this and do some fly tipping. Do you have similar schemes where you live?

  1. Do wish Yahoo Answers would just stick to the UK as most of your answers are from the US too and we are here in England where our recycling is different.

  2. I live in North Wales in the countryside.  There is no collection of recycleable waste, either by the council or by a private firm, so everything that I want to recycle I have to take to the tip myself.  Just one problem: I own a van, and the council has decided that vans cannot use the recycling depot's unless it is regestered with them.  To do this, I need three utility bills, which I do not have as I make my own electric, have my own water supply, use a compost toilet, so no sexerage costs and no other bills.  Maybe I'm an exception, but it looks like they want me to fly tip.  As for everyone else who lives locally, there must be about 50 cars making the recycle run each week, so fuel usage must be massive.

  3. I guess ours is kind of the same, anything you recycle is free for the city to pick up but we pay a monthly fee for garbage and the fee goes up depending on how big of a bin you have.  I believe our are between $11-30 a month.

  4. In our Township in Pennsylvania, USA.  We purchase Township trash bags for $2.00 (local stores carry them for the Township without making any profit).  This covers the cost of trash removal, and recycling costs.  The State has grants for recycling that are based on the number of pounds recycled, and the recycled items are sold.  When the whole community recycles the cost of the bags comes down (we used to pay $2.50)  the opposite is also true.  My household uses one 30 gal. trash bag every 3 or 4 weeks...everything else is recycled.  It's a great program, those that choose not to recycle pay more for trash removal, and a family of 2 pays less than a family of eight, because they produce less non-recyclable waste.

  5. I pay the city a monthly fee for trash, water and sewer.  If I recycle I get a $2 a month credit.

The policy where you live really makes people think twice before throwing stuff away.

My parents use to have pay per bag for trash.  The problem was some people couldn't afford that.  Then people started filling their garages with trash.  Before you knew it the mice, rats and raccoons were everywhere.  The city quickly changed the rule.

  6. My wife re-cycles nearly everything.

She takes all plastics, crushed cans. glass bottles and newspapers etc to the re-cycling plant once a week on her way to do our weekly shopping.

We therefore only put the wheelie bin out for collection every three or four weeks.

This is only possible for people who have their own transport, I know, and a rebate towards doing this would be a good idea bearing in mind the cost of fuel now.

I would also add that we have a 17 year old son at home and we don`t throw away 30% of our food which is supposed to be the national average.

Keeping the fridge stocked is the problem !!

  7. Ah thats awful, there is talk of introducing it here too (s.e. england).  To be honest, I already recycle, I already compost, so what little is left I would simply burn.  I pay council tax for my refuse to be collected freely, if that service is no longer available then... well, tough.  I'm not paying any more money.

  8. A question for all you recyclers why do you do this?

We all pay our council tax don't we, and then we go and spend a few Min's a day sorting through our rubbish to split it into different groups. now when we  have done the job for the council that we pay them to do, MY QUESTION IS IF WE DO 70% TO 80% OF THE WORK SHOULDNT WE PAY LESS COUNCIL TAX. I THINK SO.

  9. Knoxville has a few stations around the city where one may go and put plastic into one *large* container, newspaper in another, etc.  It is free, but I think negotiated as part of the city garbage pick-up contract.  I go and leave my recyclables there.

  10. i wish we have the same

  11. hi. in england (where i live) we are given three different coloured wheelie bins, ones to put household waste (mainly waste food etc) another is to put all recyclable stuff (e.g. card, paper, plastic bottles) and another is to put garden waste in (tree branchs, grass but not soil). these are collected fortnightly and the money we pay for council tax goes towards that. so i think we've got it pretty easy! with the exception of recycling glass and metal stuff, pretty much everything ther.

  12. Until it is made practical and affordable to the general public, recycling will not be used by many people. Curbside recycling is the most convenient way for most people, but I don't understand why they charge per use. Why not a flat rate perhaps that was incorporated into your garbage pick up fee? Since they in turn sell the recycled goods for profit, why charge a fee at all? Oh well, as I said, most people are not going to participate unless it's easy and painless. Absorbent fees will only encourage people to "bootleg" their trash to other locations. Where we live, the county provides a location for citizens to brings recyclables to, but they must first transport them to this location, and at today's fuel prices, once again, why bother? We do need to recycle but it must be a simple plan so that more will participate.
