Do you remember Barbra Bush wanted all of us to spread wild flowers?

I want to do it now. Are there any federal regulations preventing us to spread them in certain areas? can we just throw them out the window as we are traveling? I know the seeds should be native to our own state.

  1. My grandma and I just get the ones at wal-mart and got to the hill where her parent's ashes are and just make a day of it. we picnic and throw seeds when the wind blows. Its fun to go back and see  where the wind blew our seeds.I have only gone with her one time but she has gone for years. That hill has sprouted the prettiest flowers. The sun flowers are my favorite.

  2. That's what I thought, too, that it was Lady Bird Johnson who pushed for wildflower habitations.  Barbara Bush pushed for reading to kids and talking excessively about her dog Millie.

As for federal laws, there are some states that consider some wildflower weeds.  The vinca comes to mind.  Morning glory is another.  Check your state to see which flowers you can spread around at will and which you can't.

Your local garden club would perhaps know, as well as your county extension office through the local state university.  They have Master Gardeners who could help you with that answer.

The US Dept of Agriculture and your states Dept of Agriculture regulate what is a weed, what is a noxious weed, and what is an obnoxious weed.

But be careful TAKING wildflowers.  In most states wildflowers are protected as a natural resouce.  You can only harvest the seeds after bloom.

I live in AZ so I will give you my state's links as examples.

  3. it was ladybird johnson. there is no law against throwing seeds on the ground. there are trespassing laws if you enter someone's property without permission. go crazy with the seeds at parks, school, work, any public place.

  4. Many state DOTs (Department of Transportation) have active wildflower programs.  They work with local clubs, municipalities, and other agencies to establish wildflowers along the roadways.  My state always has a shortage of wildflower seeds and would welcome the donation.  The DOT will do all of the work for you.  Please check with your state's DOT.  They may be willing to help.  By the way, I live in Florida and work for the DOT.  Here's our website:
