  1. No, I don't.  I am a Filipino and his name does not ring a bell.  I can't even remember Filipino soldiers who died for the Filipinos and for the country except for my mom's first husband who died while in captivity at Capas, Tarlac.  Remember the infamous Death March?

  2. I've heard a story about him in a song

  3. He was one of the "heroes" (? he never received any medal of heroism) who raised the flag on Mount Suribachi Iwo Jima ( Same place Lee Marvin got shot in the butt.....Marvin was later to play Ira in a TV movie).....He was pulled out of combat and used as a recruiter for the Marines...He was never comfortable with his "hero" status...... eventually he suffered alcoholism, passed out beside a road and died of exposure.

I respect him for several reasons..... he was a fellow paratrooper..... and he hitch-hiked clear to Texas.....to tell the family of a fellow Marine of their son's heroism.....he may not have won a medal of honor but he was a MAN of honor

  4. Yes, there have been several movies about his life.

He never considered himself a hero.

  5. I'm sorry.   I have no personal recollection of this man.

But I researched, this time, before answering and I found that he was a native American and was among those in the Iwo Jima flag raising photograph.   I also found that Ira Hayes had post traumatic stress syndrome, had drinking problems, and died in his own vomit.

If you are a comrade of his,  may I offer my condolences.
