Borg was one of the best ever and he dominated most courts (with the exeption of Connors at the US open). The rivalry for number one tennis player in the world in those days came often to be between McEnroe and Borg. In spite of Borg being so great, however, he could not return effectively Mc Enroe serve. It was so much so, that there was only one thing for Borg to do. To retire. No history of rivalry ilustrates better the point, that it is often, one and only one who is the best in a particular field. The second has to quit, retire.

This week Bill Gates retired. He was great, but there was another McEnroe in the computer industry. His name: Steve P. Jobs. He is number one and the other had to quit. Retire.

To follow all this you need computer and tennis history (30 years). Do you remember that history?

  1. Yes, Bill Gates is ONLY a multi, MULTI Billionaire and one of the richest people on the planet!! I bet he feels real bad..

  2. Yes.

But in tennis, I liked Pat Rafter (great player) & much earlier Henri le Conte (Henri wasn't a no 1, but his very amusing on court antics used to charm the crowd ~ he was always a real crowd pleaser)

  3. Part 1 -

Yes, I remember Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors and the Brat.

    Part 2 -

Considering the fact that Bill Gates turns 53 on his next birthday don't you think he's entitled to retire from business?

It's not as if he will need to worry where his next meal is coming from.

  4. im only 11, but i no all of it.......

    McEnroe wasnt that magnificent

  5. yes.

  6. you've been eating the sugar cubes again, haven't you?

  7. That is a little odd to compare, I looked at the money list. Top ten.

    Warren Buffett

    Carlos Slim Helu

    William Gates III

    Lakshmi Mittal

    Mukesh Ambani

    Anil Ambani

    Ingvar Kamprad

    KP Singh

    Oleg Deripaska

    Karl Albrecht

  8. Borg was a depressed mixed up dude, 25 when he retired

  9. I don't think that McEnroe was THAT good.

  10. They were the best for the times they were active. Could they beat the best of today; no one knows, and its foolish to speculate. Borg won the first matchup with McEnroe, but later lost in one of the most classic of matches in Wimbledon history. Borg probably quit before most people think is too early, but when the game becomes an obsession, its time to quit.

  11. It seems that some people think that you are talking the best at making money. As I read it, you are talking about the best in the computer industry. Yes, Jobs was always the best.

Few people have had the honor of ushering a winning interface to use by most users. Jobs has had 3. The Graphical user interface with the Macintosh, later used by Gates in Windows The click wheel of the iPod and the interface of the iPhone, this last one, let you grab the screen with your fingers (it has a name, it will come to me when I finish writing this.) Multitouch screen, that is the name.

If Jobs lives long enough, the Macintosh will pass the PC and Apple which is now the most valuable computer company in the world (look it up, valuation) will pass Microsoft in Value (number of shares multiplied by the share price).

    Thank you for the post.

  12. All I have to offer this discussion is that in order to be No 2 in either of these fields one must already be very well off. It's not that you HAVE to retire, but I can easily see why such people would make that decision.
