I suppose it's not that difficult for me to remember because i've only been playing for three years but for some of the older folk it may be hard to recall.

Well here goes mine: I was a slightly nervous fourteen year old waiting on the sidelines, near the end of the first half our inside centre got injured and it was time for me to step out for the first time.

After a few forward drives the ball finally came out to me, i'd been instructed to play crash ball so did... I went straight through one of their flankers and thought I was king of the pitch.

The next time he was marking me he cut me in half.

What is your earliest memory of your first game?

  1. I was an over weight goalie through primary school and when I got to high school I decided to have a go at Rugby. The day we signed up in the school hall and got weighed I was told straight away by some of the teachers that I would make a great prop because of my size.

I remember going home and telling my folks and they laughed cause I did not know what a prop was. After all the pre season training I had lost 6kg and I still didnt know what a prop did until our coach split the team up to backs and forwards. When he got the scrum machine out and taught me what to do I loved it....on the scrum machine that was.

I loved the power hit and the physicality of hitting quick and hard (on the scrum machine)...better than standing in the rain keeping goal. We had a preseason game against one of our neighboring schools and after the first scrum I wanted to go back and stand in the goal mouth. My back hurt, I was intimidated by these huge Maori guys and I ran out of puff and hated the entire experience.

It was my older brother that encouraged me to keep going. He was our schools 1st 15 superstar number 8. Powerfully built, fast and very athletic. He was a member of the local athletics club as well and he told me to join and go down and train with him. I got stronger and faster over the next 2 years and became the school 100 and 200m champion in my last 2 years of high school and went from number 3 to 7 and finally to 13 where I stayed until I retired at 32.

But I will never forget that horrible introduction to front row play. Never again thank god for that...those guys are a different type of athlete and I have the utmost respect for those props.

  2. Sh*t my pants

  3. 30 kids chasing a ball around the field in Under 7s playing for Easts

  4. my earliest memory was when I made myself a forward. I was playing outside centre. We were all waiting for the ball to come out our side. but we only won 20 percent of out own rucks and mauls. I couldn't stand it anymore. Our forwards weren't doing their job so I just went in. Didn't think, just went in and as soon as i went in a drove, i drove and kept driving until i felt my arms wrap around the ball. I did this in every ruck and maul even though i was playing in the backs. next training i was training in the forwards

  5. Similar to Dropkick's. I remember running on but that is about it. It was a long time ago. Sputnik 4 had just been launched, the Rome Olympics

  6. i played scrum half my first match, under 17s so everyone seemed to know what they were doing...... i **** my pants, the first thing i had to do was organise a move off a scrum...the other prop kicked the hands off me.... ball in...ball came out, 8 picked, crashed, poped it to me, i ran the line, and go flattened by their HUGE full back, turns out i did ok, i stepped a winger instinctively... i didn't even remember it afterwards...my lefty pass was so c**p they just put me at full back after a few matches....
