Do you remember what age you started using your child's full name?

Last night for the first night in my son's life I used his full name when addressing him to get his attention. Little Mr. Bradley had turned on and off the big screen a number of times and I finally had enough. He stopped, looked at me confused and walked over to hug me. Obviously I sounded angry as well. So, at 13 months old he heard his full name while getting in trouble. It sounded funny and it felt weird. "I'm officially a mom now" I thought, after I said it. Why saying that particular phrase made any difference I don't know. But it did. I shouldn't complain too much, he's a wonderful child, how many 13 month old's say "thank you" everytime you hand them something? Do you remember when you first started using your child's full name in this manner? Or, is it too early just yet? Did you feel "funny" the first time you said it? or Do you think you will?

  1. 3 weeks ago, Eli wouldn't stop pulling the cats hair, so I put on my "mom voice" and came out with his full name, Eli Alberic ******, he didn't give a hoot and his Dad started giggling like a little girl, which totally defeated the whole purpose, or did it?

  2. I don't remember exactly when my mother started addressing me with the "first-middle-and-last" names, but it struck fear in my very soul then. . .and I have flashbacks to this day!  Ha!  Probably remember it when I was four or five years old.

  3. lol. Good question. Your son is so advanced. My son is 13 months and not walking. He does talk, but not as much as your son. And he walked up and hugged you! My baby is still a baby, lol. Yours is a kid alright.

I think with my daughter I did when she was a toddler. I don't remember the exact age now. But I am sure that you will use it much more, lol! I know by the time she was 4 it was a regular thing:)

  4. I started using full names probably at about the same time with my twins...right around a year. It did sound weird...I felt like my mom when I did it....but it gets their attention!

  5. i say ruby's first and middle name all the time now. sometimes i say all 3, yup. it started about two weeks ago. i remember thinking, "why do we all do this?" i don't know where i possibly got the inclination because it was never said to me -- i have no middle name!!!! it's weird, how it just comes out. funny.

  6. Little Mr. Bradley?  That's an unusual name.  I think my children were 2 when I used their full names, but I don't think their is a correct age to start. Really not a big deal.

  7. my mom started using my full name when i was like 5....

  8. That's hilarious! I never thought that someone might NOT use a full name from birth! I even use the kids' full names when babysitting or nannying them. Most of the time, it's in fun, but once in awhile the full name's used when they're in trouble. Just yesterday, Ava (who is 11 mos old) was going straight for her sister's hair, so I Ava Rose ******'d her! She stopped dead in her tracks, looked up at me and smiled. I've always called them by their first and middle names--I figure, someone went through the torture of agreeing on two separate names for their child, I may as well use them :-)

  9. i remember the 1st time my mom used it i was 5 and she cried and said "im getting old like my mom!" i didnt understand it, but now that my little one is due in 5 weeks and 3 days im startin to feel pretty old! lol i hope i will never say that but i find myself saying it to his father already when im mad at him! lol
