How fast would the wind have to be to keep you from being comfortable during your ride? What would you say is the maximum wind speed you would go out and ride in? Thanks for the help.

  1. Any of us who ride regularly ride in the wind.  Your question is difficult to answer intelligently because wind direction is as important as wind speed.  That said, I avoid riding when the wind is steadily over 15 mph -- unless I'll just be riding one way downwind.

Head winds are simply hard to ride into, but enhance your workout.  Tail winds are a blast.  The real danger is in cross winds, especially riding in mountainous areas where downhill speeds can be upwards of 50 mph.  My body weight is low and I ride an extremely light weight road bike, so a strong cross wind at high speeds here in the mountains can really be tricky.

Real riders ride -- in wind, rain and snow.  A few years ago we had an early snow, a hard blowing snow, here on Halloween eve, but my buddies, all serious cyclists, made our planned training ride -- except for Alfred.  He went to the local lake in the freezing cold to wind surf.  He said he hated to miss the opportunity of a strong wind.  Alfred is my kind of man.  He has since moved to Hawaii so that he can wind surf and cycle most any time he pleases.

  4. yes i ride in the wind. I have rode in 30 + mph crosswinds before. I drew the line when it was gusts up to 45 mph crosswinds. As I do most of my riding to work with a backpack on my raleigh m40.

  5. Wind, Rain, Tornado Warnings, Front line winds, Snow, Ice, and lightning.  They are all fun to ride in.  The only things that will ever make me stay home, is my wife telling me no...
