Do you run when the air is unhealthy?

The air here in Sacramento has been really bad because of all the fires in California, it has prevented me from running for almost two weeks now. I have the SF Marathon coming up in 4 weeks so I need to log some miles.

So do you run when the air is unhealthy?

  1. I'm not a certified trainer or anything, but you'll probably need to take certain factors into consideration.

Are you asthmatic? If so, consult your doctor.

Have your lungs worked against such conditions in the past? You don't want to worsen your situation if your lungs haven't been trained in extreme or worse conditions.

I know many Olympians are training in countries surrounding China before they take to their own events because of China's pollution. Many athletes in China are used to all the junk in the air so their bodies are indifferent to the existing conditions in their home country.
