in sgp selflessness is not absent but quite rare probably not so common.  of course there are thousands who give quietly to charity, social workers who work laboriously with low pay and without batting an eyelid are examplars of selflessness.

but i think the fact that they cant get enough pple to win these charity awards of selflessness shows the dearth of it.  maybe many wishes to remain anonymous.

usu such work is handled by a minority few while the majority sit and watch and as sgporeans - complain and nag.  probably the weather has made us to be such!?

mcys will deny this.  and they cannot say it even if they know the number of volunteers there are.  some do voluntary work for their ego and not selflessness.  i know of quite a number.

the latest with that reverend shows how the ego is still the barrier.  nkf fellow too.  its disgusting to think that 50 to 60% of an ngo budget goes to admin & salary hence the needy gets pittance and the govt is sooo rich!

this is also found in western developed countries except  northern europe.
