  1. Any ferret you buy from a petstore will already be fixed, and it is only an unfixed female that has to have a mate to definitely survive.

It is better to buy two of them anyway, though.  They really like each other's company.

  2. Some people have a single ferret, but they really enjoy having a friend.  I started with one and got a 2nd within a month - they love being together and they are no more work.  AND they do not stink.  They have an odour as does any pet.  Wet dogs are worse (even some that aren't wet)

  3. NO, you buy them in pairs because they are very active and when they have a friend for company, they are happier.

What you are probably thinking about is the female ferret and the need to spay her or breed her or she will develope a form of anemia.

Jills are 'induced ovulators' which means that if they are not mated she will remain in season.  This can have serious even fatal consequences. She is liable to infection due to the enlarged v***a and due to the continued production of estrogen in her body can lead to bone marrow depression which leads to a form of anemia (aplastic anemia). She will also smell more with a slight musky odour during her season.
