  13. My birthday is on the 21st of March, just one day before yours!

    I share it with Alick Bannerman, Australian cricketer in the 19th century (born in 1854), brother of Charles Bannerman. Alick played 28 Tests for Australia between 1879 and 1893. In his first Test, Alick top-scored (as Charles had memorably done on his debut in 1876/77, hitting 165) with 73. Had he managed another 27, the Bannermans would be the only brothers both to score Test centuries on debut.

    Alick was renowned as an ultra-defensive, almost strokeless batsman, so much so that English bowler William Attewell once bowled 204 balls to him in an innings, only 5 of which were scored off. The crowd who came to watch him bat barracked him with this verse:

    "O Bannerman, O Bannerman,

    We wish you'd change your manner, man;

    We pay our humble tanner, man,

    To see a bit of fun.

    You're a beggar though to stick it,

    But it ain't our sort of cricket;

    They haven't hit your wicket,

    Yet, you haven't got a run."
