I'm from California and will be moving to Boston. I know nothing about "Snow Days". What are they exactly? Approximately how many are there a year in Boston? (I know - depending on the winter) And does a workplace still pay you for work that day they call a "Snow Day?" ANy info would be appreciated!

  1. It is dependent entirely on who you work for.  You need to either discuss this with your employer or (in most cases) read their guidelines concerning work during inclement weather conditions.

I have seen winters with no real "snow days" in Boston but have seen some years where there were more than a dozen. It varies from year to year.

There are no labor laws that govern how an employer has to handle a snow day. Each is allowed to set their own guidelines and rules concerning whether or not the employees are paid, allowed to take a vacation day, sick leave, or other administrative leave of absence from work in the event of a "snow day".

For many emergency services employees (most often public employees which could include firemen, paramedics, snow plow drivers, public services such as water, electrical company, telephone, and others) are required to make, at a minimum, a good faith attempt to report for work no matter what. In many cases, the employer has resources (four wheel drive or even snowmobiles) to get "emergency" employees to work when regular transportation is too dangerous.

  2. i work for the local government and if they consider it a snow day and 'close the county' then we get paid for it. i don't know about school systems. but if the weather is bad and you can't make it to work, but the office is open, most likely you won't get paid for it.

  3. More than likely, no. I live in Ohio and have never gotten paid for a snow day. It might just depend on where you work though.

  4. depends on your job ask your manager
