An apartment complex that I used to live in claimed that I owed them about $800 for cleaning my apartment. $300 of it was for replacing carpet that was 3 years old and needed replacing anyway. Then they tried to charge me $17 a bag for supposedly 25 bags of trash that was left in the apartment when there was, at most, 3 thirty gallon trash bags of clothes left behind. This complex has been torn down to make room for a gas well which has me wondering if I still owe them the money?

  1. Yes, you still owe it.  It's likely the debt rights were sold.  Whether they try to collect is another matter.  It could also be on your credit reports already.  If you can live with that, ignore it.  Otherwise dispute it and make them prove their damages.

  2. Yes you owe the money to the the current owner of the debt. I would suggest that you make a deal to pay lower amount if you can. In any case make sure this issue get resolved before being reported to your credit reports.

  3. Yes you still owe the money. Now I did not see the condition of the apartment after you moved out but just to let you  know that landlords often take pictures of damage caused by former tenants.
