Concern over rising s*x attacks in India's tourist hotspots

PANAJI (India) - AUTHORITIES in India's popular tourist destinations are boosting security after a spate of sexual attacks against foreigners, officials said Monday.

The federal government has called top tourism officials from all states for a meeting in capital New Delhi this month to review security measures after the highly publicised incidents.

Several women have been raped and sexually attacked this month in Goa, Kerala and Rajasthan - three of the most visited places in India.

In the latest incident, a British woman reported she was raped in the beach resort of Goa.

'We are adopting zero tolerance towards such accused. We are dealing seriously with these cases,' Goa's chief minister, Digamber Kamat, said at the weekend in state capital Panaji.

The Kerala state government also said it will intensify police patrols after two sexual assaults this month.

'We have requested tour operators to submit the list of personnel employed in the resorts and police verification would be conducted against all the employees,' said V. Venu, Kerala's tourism secretary.

Separately, a British woman and an American woman also complained of similar attacks in the desert state of Rajasthan last week. -- AFP

  4. Ya.  India is still safe though we keep hearing shocking and shameful crimes.  It also becomes your responsibility to be aware and careful when you are in any foreign country.  You have to be cautious and also smart to not allow others to get the better of you.  If you do not give others a chance to take you for a ride, you do not end up on the wrong side.

Do not take things for granted.  Be alert and do not take chances.  But do visit India, there are beautiful places and exotic which is more worth than the fears you have.

  8. India is a safe country to visit. Tourists need to be aware that they can not just roam around at night. When traveling at night or going out at night, tourist/locals should stay in groups. Females should not roam around alone at night.

A few years back Indian females were being raped and sexually harassed. No one said anything then. They are human as well.

When traveling to any country, an individual needs to take care of themselves and beware of the surroundings.

The Government of India should have taken action longs time back, when these types of acts where taking place against their local females.

Is the police actually going to do something or are they just going to stand their and watch. Not much help was provided to the local females that were sexually harassed and raped a few years ago. How is this government meeting going to change these rapes and harassment's from occurring. Is there going to be any punishment for those who get caught.
